You are a respected Geologist from Georgia Tech and have been asked by the President of the United States to consult on a design for a new statue to commemorate the life and legacy of the late congressman John Lewis. The President wants this statue made of stone and placed in Georgia's 5th Congressional District in Atlanta, preferably outside near Centennial Park. As the consulting geologist you need to make a recommendation on the material choice and the location for the statue based on scientific principles and data.
YOUR TASK:
Write a recommendation to the President for both a statue LOCATION and STONE TYPE using a business letter format :
YOUR TASK:
Write a recommendation to the President for both a statue LOCATION and STONE TYPE using a business letter format :
- Recommended a LOCATION for the stature in the 5th congressional district. Explain why this is an ideal location using provided chemical weathering data, information from your research and what you know about chemical/physical weathering threats in Metro Atlanta.
- Recommend the best stone type for the statue? Explain why this is the best stone to use for the chosen location using provided chemical weathering data, information from your research and what you know about chemical/physical weathering threats in Metro Atlanta.
Use these resources to help you decide which STONE TYPE is best for your desired location!
Table 1: Chemical Weathering Data- Limestone and Granite were placed in various solutions/temperatures as indicated below, The masses of the stone samples were recorded before and after being in each solution/temperature for 15 min. The percent of the mass remaining after 15 minutes was calculated.
Use these resources to help you decide which LOCATION is best for the statue!
The location can be anywhere inside the 5th congressional district outlined by the map to the left, but you will need to recommend a specific physical location. You will need to decide if the statue will be located inside a structure, or outside exposed to Atlanta's climate. (for example at the inside the Georgia State student services building lobby, or placed outside in Centennial Olympic Park).
